Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship, Midtown) on Being Veg

I was always a dog lover. But it wasn't until I got into punk rock that I was exposed to the idea of animal rights. I remember buying the Gorilla Biscuits album and listening to a song called "Cats and Dogs." That song opened my eyes to how weird it is that we call certain animals "pets" and treat them like members of the family, and yet other animals we label "food," and suck the meat off their bones. There was one line in that song that always stayed with me.

My true compassion is for all living things / and not just the ones that are cute / so I do what I can.

And I guess at the end of the day, that's what it's all about: doing what you can. Even if you don't become a vegetarian, the realization that that juicy steak on your plate was once a living being will give you a deeper appreciation for the life that animal lost to supply you with your dinner.

Spreading awareness is the first step towards affecting change. And the amazing thing about concerts like warped tour is that they serve not only as a place to find great new music, but also as a forum for new ideas; a place where you can be exposed to concepts that will open your eyes.

I'm not grossed out by meat, and I never judge my friends who eat meat, but I just figure--we have so many food choices and options--so why make an animal suffer, and why take the life of another living thing, if I don't really need it in order to survive.

You know, I applaud him for being veggie and for personally being non-judgmental. But I really wish he wouldn't support groups who are judgmental of people who eat meat...like Peta.

dude i love ya Gabe. and yesh i no wut u mean. im not a vegetarian. but i am trying not to eat as much animal. mostly b/c instead of wasting your time eating away something unhealthy and bad for u. u can just save its life but just eating something more healthy for u. and not just fatting hamburgers and stuff. but i love wut u all are doing for the world and all the animals. its awesome!

Amen Gabe! Amen!
chyeah177: 07/18/2008 9:55 AM
well, i like both veggies and meat. and i respect Gabe and i respect vegetarians
but to call meat unhealthy is wrong because it has a lot of things that you cannot find in vegetables alone and to say that you don't want to eat living things and kill living things, plants are living things.
so either way, meat eater or vegetarian, you still are eating somthing that lives and breathes.

Meat can be healthy, but this buzznet is trying to prove a point. It's going to be biased but that's okay. This is trying to educate people that there is an alternative to eating meat and it's okay if you don't.

i totally have to agree with gabe. it is very gross when my brother calls steak ''his baby''. I am not a vegitarian yet because of my parents and how ashamed they would be but i do believe in animals rights. i hate steak and i won't eat it or hamburgers. i only eat veggie burgers.

I have been a veg. for 15 years and I am sickened by meat. It has steriods and tons of hard core braod spectrum anti biotics in most of it. I dislike the smell! I give these musicans props for doing this on tour as you have to get the proper subs for meat like legumes and nuts, etc and specialized food that must be difficult to procure on tour! They make great role models, espically the straight edgers XXX!
Thats what AFI(band) has done for me,they've given me that extra push to be straight edge and (hopefully I can find a way if my mom allows it) To go Vegan.I've already pledge on this website that I'll
go Veg for a whole month.
