Why did you go vegan or vegetarian?

We have started this blog on our MySpace page in an effort to discover effective ways of promoting veganism. Please tell us why you went vegan or vegetarian, what motivated you, and what was your turning point?

Please try to be specific about what prompted you to go vegan or vegetarian—not just the reasons why one should go vegan or vegetarian.

If there were any tactics that you feel kept you from being vegan sooner or were not effective, please elaborate on those as well.

If you have MySpace, please login, go to our page, and post your reply as a comment on our “Why Did You Go Vegan or Vegetarian?” blog.

I became vegetarian because I could not handle eating a burger knowing that the burger once had a face, a family, and feelings. I literally could not eat them.
My tactic for vegetarianism was to take it slowly. Give up one thing at a time. Also, with my veg-food, I soak my nuggets in ketchup, etc.
At first, it's hard, but soon you don't even miss meat.
Though I do get chicken cravings. But Morningstar Chick'n Nuggets ALWAYS soothes it. Those nuggets are REALLY good.

well i dunno if this will be helpful!! lol but i became vegetarian mainly because the thot of it all totally disgusted me. even when i was younger there was something about eating meat that i didnt like so i just stopped. also even if i think about eating it i feel physically sick so its really not hard for me to be vegetarian. im not the kinda person whos like i dont eat so you shouldnt to my friends tho. my dadtries to persuade me to eat it as he thinks im losing vital nutrients and stuff. but firstly, as i said it makes me want to throw up, secondly, i personally think its really disgusting and finally, it has been shown that its not bad towards your diet. also i totally love animals and i just cant do that.

I became a vegetarian because I am very passionate about my love for animals. I then discovered, all the pain & suffering animals go through...it just broke my heart. How could someone do something so cruel? My tatic for vegetarianism is slowly elminate meat, fish, etc. It's a little hard at first, but it DOES get easier. I want to become vegan, but it's virtually impossible right now.
the reason I'm not vegetarian any more is because my parents won't buy vegetarian food, there are no vegetarian or vegan resturants around here, and because I was a bother to everyone I ate with....sounds insensitive and awful, but it's true...but I do make my mom buy all our meat from local markets instead of supporting the mass production of animals, I mean, I can't say I think it's wrong to eat meat, but I definately think it's evil to treat them like they are a product that isn't alive...the way they mas produce them with no thought totheir health or happiness is what discusts me...

I polan to become full fledged vegetarian as soon as I'm on my own though, and I plan on raising my kids as vegetarians, like cooking veggie meals....morningstar chik'n is delicious! The "beef" imo is horrid though...

one day, i woke up and decided i was a vegetarian. i had recently become obsessed with AFI and knew that they were all vegetarians/vegans. after cutting out meat initially, i became more interested in animal cruelty and started researching and stuff. now, after seeing pictures and videos of how horrible it is for those animals, i will never eat meat again.

i was a vegeterian for two or one month.. but then my whole family thought i was gonna become anorexic and that meat is healthy and they were gonna send me to the doctor's..so i had a big fight with them all.
anndd yeah if there wasnt my family i wouldnt eat meat. but i eat it like twice a week..in small pieces.

The reason I became a vegan is because when I was 6 years old one of my uncles gave me one of his horses which was a blue roan and I loved it to death and a few years later when I came to visit him I found out that one of my other uncles had it slaughtered for meat, a pair of boots for him and other things the other reasons are because I've never really liked the taste of meat it just never really tasted right, I love animals too much, and I dont think how they treat them is right.

I think im gonna go vegitarian but the thing is i dont know how so can any1 tell me how to get started

awesome that you want to be vegetarian!! the first thing i like to tell people when they're considering going vegetarian or vegan is to have fun with it -- don't think of it as being about what foods you're giving up, but instead as an opportunity to try new foods and learn about all the different reasons to be veg -- and think of how amazing of a thing it is that you're doing for the animals. going vegan saves the lives of 100 animals per year, which is pretty awesome.
i'd recommend learning about the reasons to be veg -- animals, health, the environment, human rights, world hunger, global warming, etc. -- knwoing why you're veg can make it easier to stay veg and tell other people about your decision. and with that, stop eating foods that are the result of cruelty -- some people cut out everything right away, some people cut out one thing a day, week, etc. -- do what works for you. for most people, they stop eating meat first, then eventually stop eating eggs, dairy, and other animal products. as you're cutting those things out, have fun exploring things like the fake meat products, soy milk, almond milk, and new veg dishes.
for a list of "accidently vegan" foods, check out: http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/default. asp
for lots of info, including videos, check out our myspace page (especially the PDFs of flyers): http://www.myspace.com/actionforanimals

if there's ever anything that you -- or anyone else -- has questions about or wants more info on, just let me know and i'm glad to help :)

i did it cuz i saw how poorly these animals were treated.it also made me feel bad about eating them when i had seen wut they had gone though. when i younger i lived behind a farm, n a cow broke its leg ,the farmer pulled the cow by its leg and it waz killed. it also didnt make any sence to eat another living thing to me. eating meat is big to my dad cuz his famly owned a bucher

I became vegetarian because it's exactly the same as eating meat, without killing anything.

If you like the taste of meat, for some reason, which is in your own specific tastebuds, you can get vegetarian alternatives which taste exactly the same, and some with the same amount of protein, and whatever else you gain from meat, so whatever reason you're giving yourself to eat meat, there's a very easy vegetarian option to choose instead..

Agreed, it's just the same - only difference is it's not wrapped up in attractive wrappers at your local store.
